The Boxes under the White House Christmas Tree

Category: Transport

Over at the World Bank blog The Trade Post, the stacked cargo shipping containers under the Christmas tree on the Ellipse south of the White House in Washington, DC, are seen as a signal of US support for an open and revived international trading system – one more hopeful sign on the heels of the multilateral WTO trade facilitation agreement just reached in Bali.

The work of volunteers, this year’s National Christmas Tree Railroad is certainly a testament to the growing importance of intermodal to railroads. According to the Association of American Railroads, intermodal accounted for 22.6% of revenue for major US railroads through September 2013 – and was on track to overtake coal as the largest single source of US rail revenue.

More simply, trains under the tree are a holiday tradition … and fun to look at. There are more photos here.
