Coconut water meets US market’s growing thirst for natural, healthy drinks
In the US market for nonalcoholic beverages, sales of sugary, fizzy soft drinks are flat, while consumption of “wellness beverages” is up sharply. (The segment is getting its own trade show, Healthy Beverage Expo, next June.)
And within this high-growth segment, the still-new coconut water category is setting a dizzying pace – doubling revenues every year since 2005, according to the Wall Street Journal. Vita Coco, Zico, and O.N.E. are the top sellers (numbers 1, 2 , and 3, respectively) in the $350-million US market.
Coconut water doesn’t grow on trees in the US, so there is a rising tide in imports (see below).
Vita Coco (importing as consignee All Market Inc.) is also the top importer, followed by O.N.E. (One World Enterprises).
