New HS codes capture trade in organic produce

This past year was the first in which specific Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) codes were available to identify incoming shipments to the US of fruits, vegetables, coffee, and grains that are “Certified Organic.” [See By the Numbers]

Here’s how share in the US market for imported organic fruit broke out in first-half 2011, based on data collected for the new, certified organic HTS codes 0804400020 (hass avocados and avocados), 0808100045 (apples) 0808202015 (pears and quinces) 0808204015 (pears and quinces) 0810400026 (blueberries, cultivated).
