Who’s Who in Pineapple: Del Monte is One – but Which One?

One of the great things about Datamyne’s data assets is that you can dig into the transactions that underlie the statistics – and profiles of the parties to the trade.

The market shift in US pineapple imports (see Fresh, Not Canned) led us to the bill-of-lading data to find out which companies are affected.

Here are the top importers – the declared consignees on the bills of lading – for fresh or dried pineapple and for canned pineapple:

Top US Consignees of Imported Pineapple, Canned versus Fresh 2012

We were at first struck that the Del Monte brand-name – which, frankly, we’re more used to seeing on cans – ranks among the top importers of fresh pineapple.

But, in fact, Fresh Del Monte Produce, Inc., is not affiliated with Del Monte Foods, which makes consumer food products, including the canned variety, and pet food products – or did, until earlier this month.

On October 11, Singapore-listed Del Monte Pacific Ltd (not affiliated with the other Del Montes), announced it would buy the US-based Del Monte Foods’ consumer products division – giving it the right to market Del Monte canned foods in the US and South America. Del Monte Pacific, operator of the largest pineapple plantation in the world, expects to leverage the processed pineapple business in the US (and buck the trend?) and South America.

Meanwhile, Fresh Del Monte, which holds a perpetual license to use the trademark for prepared foods in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, continues to sell canned foods in those markets.

Back in the US, Del Monte Foods says it will soon be changing its name to reflect its focus on pet products.

With multinationals, related-party trading and, as with Del Monte, joint custody of venerable brands by multiple progeny, you need more than the name and address on the bill of lading to figure out who’s buying and who’s selling.

Datamyne Trade Profiles fills that need with comprehensive background information about the companies engaged in US import-export trade. We used it to sort out the Del Montes.

With its latest enhancement, Trade Profiles offers the names and email addresses of key contacts supplied by Data.com, a cloud-based business data solution that offers access to millions of B2B decision-makers. Request a free online demo here.
