Score for Deckers Outdoor, US company that’s a brand maker, not a shoemaker

Move over electronic devices – Uggs was the No. 1 product searched for online on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, according to Experian Marketing Services (as reported here in the Wall Street Journal).

UGG Australia is a brand of Deckers Outdoor Corporation – a case in point for those who argue the future of American business lies not in actually making products (work that can be done more economically by off-shore manufacturers) but in inventing and marketing them to the world.

Here’s how the company describes itself: “Deckers Outdoor Corporation is a premier lifestyle marketer that builds niche brands into global market leaders by designing and marketing innovative, functional and fashion footwear developed for both high performance outdoor activities and everyday casual lifestyle use.” Other Decker Outdoor brands include Teva, Sanuk, TSUBO, Ahnu, and MOZO.

So where does the footwear that Deckers Outdoor brings to market come from? Contract manufacturers across the Pacific. We looked up the company’s Datamyne Profile for this list of the company’s top suppliers in the rolling year ending in September 2012.
