Reducing US dependence on foreign sources of energy is touted as one of the benefits of adopting wind and solar energy technologies. But, says IER, so-called green energy options require rare earth minerals and lithium for batteries, materials the US must import from a very short list of suppliers.
The analysis by the non-profit IER [Institute for Energy Research] draws on data from several sources, including Datamyne data on US lithium imports.
