Presidential candidates in both parties are proposing changes to international trade policies that could have dramatic impacts on busy trade centers like Maryland.
In advance of Maryland’s April 26 primary, the Maryland Reporter looks at the importance of trade to the state’s economic vitality. The 13th busiest port in the US (as ranked by Datamyne), Baltimore directly generates 14,600 jobs, with 108,000 more statewide linked to port activity. Campaign promises of higher tariffs and other barriers to trade, if kept, could slow the economic engine that creates those jobs, labor and business leaders tell the Maryland Reporter.
